Bioinformatics, comparative genomics, gene transfer, endosymbiosis, protists, algae
Archibald Lab, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Highly skilled and self-motivated researcher at the postdoctoral level to study endosymbiosis from a comparative genomic perspective. Organisms of interest include (but are not limited to) cryptophyte algae and Paramoeba species.
The Archibald Lab is part of a collegial and internationally recognized community of comparative genomics and molecular evolution researchers at Dalhousie University. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with these researchers and with those at other institutions. Demonstrated skills in bioinformatics and comparative genomics are essential, as are strong written and oral communication abilities. The position is available starting May 1, 2021 (actual start date negotiable) and will run for an initial 1-year period, with the possibility of extension to 3 years given satisfactory performance. All qualified and interested persons are encouraged to apply.

Doctoral candidate / Project researcher fixed term position in microbial genetics

University of Turku; the Doctoral student / Project researcher will work on an Academy of Finland-funded project “Functional and social structure of bacterial communities”. The position is fixed term from March 1, 2021 and last for a maximum of three years.
A PhD-track graduate position at NC State University (Raleigh, NC)

The position is part of an NSF funded collaborative project with Gifford (https://gifford.web.unc.edu/ ) and Bertrand (https://erinbertrand.wixsite.com/bertrandlab ) Labs that focuses on vitamin B1 limitation of marine bacterioplankton and the advantages of vitamin B1 auxotrophy. The project involves both laboratory and field-based experiments/sampling off the coast of North Carolina.

Competitive candidates for the position will have:
Notable research experience as well interest in marine microbial ecology or microbial ecology
DNA extraction, PCR skills
Experience generating and analyzing of amplicon sequence data using current methods (e.g. DADA2)
Bioinformatics and metagenomic sequencing/analysis skills
A collaborative and ambitious mentality
An ability to lead workplans/experiments
Scientific writing experience – with at least 1 first author publication
Experience axenically cultivating bacteria
